Nintendo Direct – 23.09.2021

The first thing Nintendo wanted to show off was a “massive” expansion for Monster Hunter Rise, known as “Sunbreak”. It is set to release in Summer of 2022.

Capcom are looking to add new locations, stories and monsters as part of the expansion. It will be a paid expansion, but the price is yet to be announced.

Mario Party Superstars looks to be some kind of virtual board game you can play on Switch. It also includes a mini game only mode, for those of you who don’t want to play the board game. It can be played locally or online. That will launch on October 29th.

It looks as though a new RPG is on the cards, aptly titled Voice of Cards : The Isle Dragon Roars. It looks to take a lot of RPG elements, but everything is controlled by cards. Shops, battles, explorations. Every single thing you do is portrayed by cards.

I guess it is taking it’s inspiration from tabletop RPG’s very seriously. The battles are also turned based. There is a free demo to try, which is always nice to hear. It’s coming from Square Enix studios and will arrive on October 28th.

“Become a hero or an absolute disaster of a human being”. That’s a bit of a mouthful for a tagline. It doesn’t exactly roll right off of the tongue. Nonetheless, the critically acclaimed Disco Elysium is scheduled to release the “Final Cut” on October 12th (digitally) and early in 2022 (physical).

It’s not really my style of game, but it looks to be a cool detective story. I appreciate a good story, but I prefer some action to be added with it.

Hyrule Warriors has another expansion on it’s horizon. Wave 2 : Guardian of Remembrance will release on October 29th (why are they all releasing on the same day??). It will include a new story as well as new playable characters, weapons, stages and costumes.

Final Fantasy is the next franchise to sell it’s soul in an attempt to make a Mario Kart-esque racer. It looks like a direct rip-off of Mario Kart, just with Chocobo’s. Shame on you, Square Enix. Chocobo GP will be available in 2022. Better mark that one on the calendar!

The last fighter for Super Smash Bros Ultimate will be announced on the 5th of October. I don’t know why they didn’t just tell us now, but I also don’t care. I don’t really have much of an interest in it. After 3 years, the roster will finally be complete.

We go over to a beach and see a familiar looking pink blob. That’s right, it’s Kirby (and the Forgotten Land)! It looks to be your basic Kirby game. I am just getting old and cynical, or has this been a boring direct so far? I don’t want to keep replaying the same games and franchises that I played when I was 4 years old. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is slated for a 2022 release.

Animal Crossing will have a “Direct” of it’s own, sometime in October (no specific date yet). October is Nintendo month, apparently. The only information we got on the upcoming direct is that it will feature more details on new content (which comes out in November). I still haven’t played Animal Crossing, but one day I will. Probably.

Mario Golf : Super Rush will receive it’s 2nd free update! That’s pretty impressive, especially considering I had no idea this game was ever in development, had been released or had received a first update. Anyway, Koopa Troopa will now be a playable character. So will Ninji (who the heck is that?). There will be 2 more courses added as well. The good news is, you don’t have to wait! It’s out now.

Disney Magical World 2 : Enhanced Edition by Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc will release sometime this year. It is a remaster of the Nintendo 3DS game and it looks like fun if you are a child, or suck at video games but love Disney (like my wife). Could we not get a shorter name though?

Finally! Something cool! Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic will make it’s way to the Nintendo Switch. Yes, I realise that I just complained about rehashing the same franchises/games over and over. This is different though, I have never actually played this game. Besides, it’s my website and I’ll be a hypocrite if I want to.

The narrator asks “Will you use the force for good or evil?”. Obviously evil. Unfortunately, we have to wait until November 11th for this one.

A cloud based version of Dying Light 2 : Stay Human is on the way. I’m curious how the streaming will work, especially here in Australia with our subpar internet. At least we will have a free demo to test it out. I didn’t mind Dying Light, but I felt it was missing something. Speaking of, there will also be a Platinum Version of the first game released on October 19th. February 4th is the day for number 2, for the demo and the full game.

Triangle Strategy looks like a direct copy of Octopath Traveller. Almost identical. Characters, environments and texts all look just like Octopath. Octopath was great, but have some originality. Also, what’s with the name? Triangle Strategy will launch on March 4th.

Samus Aran is back! Metroid Dread looks like a bit of fun if you are into that kind of genre. I don’t mind them, but will probably do Axiom Verge 2 instead. I don’t like to play too many platformers in one year. It does look really fun though. You can head to planet ZDR on October 8th.

Up next for some news on Nintendo Switch Online! Please be GBA, please be GBA. N64. That’s still pretty cool. And fitting considering this year is the 25th anniversary of the console. I never had a N64. I went from SNES to PS1. They will also be adding a collection of games from the Sega Genesis. Cool.

Unfortunately, it looks like it will be at an additional cost. The price is yet to be revealed, but the new membership plan launches in (you guessed it) October. You can also purchase wireless N64 and Sega controllers to play the games with.

Some of the games included at launch will be Ocarina of Time, Super Mario and StarFox. For Sega, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star IV and Streets of Rage are amongst the highlights. Oh, and Ecco the Mother Flippin’ Dolphin! There is a title I haven’t thought about in 20 odd years. More games will be added in the future, including Pokémon Snap!

The ShadowRun trilogy will include all 3 games (hence the trilogy) from the original series, launching sometime next year. Castlevania will one up them, releasing 4 games as part of their collection! The Castlevania Advanced collection is available now.

Actraiser Renaissance has been remastered in HD (how does that even happen for a SNES game and why do we bother?) and is out right now! They’ve added some new songs and bosses etc etc.

A new chapter for Deltarune is out right now, and as free update. I’ve heard a lot of great things about this game, but watching the trailer just now didn’t impress me. I can’t argue with the price, but I’ll still give it a miss.

A quick bunch of teasers followed :

September 30th will be the release date for Hot Wheels Unleashed.

Surviving the Aftermath will be out in “the Holidays”, which we all know are hard enough to survive in their own right.

Shin Megami Sensei V is available for digital pre-orders (seriously, what’s the point of that?) but has no release date yet.

Wreckfest is set for Fall of ‘21.

Pac-Man and Xevious are both available now through Arcade Archives.

Rune Factory 5 will be out on the 22nd of March, 2022.

Miyamota joined the broadcast for a surprise announcement. I don’t think anyone saw this coming. They are working on a Super Mario movie, releasing in December of 2022. A Super Mario movie!

Chris Pratt will voice Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy will be Peach, Charlie Day is Luigi, Jack Black is Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key is Toad and Seth Rogen is Donkey Kong. Charles Martinet is involved, but no role has been attached to his name yet. Wow. What a star studded cast.

Splatoon 3! It looks just as zany and fun as the first 2. Man, I loved Splatoon when it first launched. It will feature a single player campaign, called “Return of the Mammalians”.

The last trailer shown at the Direct was for Bayonetta 3, which is coming in 2022. I honestly thought that this was for Bayonetta 4. I don’t play these games, but it has been over 5 years since Bayonetta 3 was announced. Crazy.

And that’s the end. It was a bit of a lacklustre event. There isn’t a lot I’m super excited for, if anything. Probably just Star Wars. Splatoon 3 looks cool, but I hardly have time for games anymore, so my Switch gets shafted a little bit.
