State of Play- 25.02.2021

Sony had their first State of Play of 2021 and announced some new titles for PS4 and 5! Here is the link to the full event on YouTube, but I’ll give it all the rundown if you don’t want to spend half an hour watching!

Crash Bandicoot (PS5)

First up was the PS5 version of Crash Bandicoot 4 : It’s About Time. I love that name and the previous titles, but I haven’t actually played it yet. It’s releasing on PS5 on March 12th, so only a few weeks away. The PS5 version has been enhanced to make use of the adaptive triggers, it will run actively in 4k at 60FPS and will make use of 3D Audio, but does require a compatible headset for that. They also added that the game will have faster load times and you can transfer your save file from the PS4 version over to the PS5, picking up where you left off from. In addition, if you already own the PS4 version, it looks like you will get to upgrade for free.

Returnal (PS5)

Returnal is an upcoming action/adventure game from Housemarque Studios. Returnal has promised an engaging and in-depth narrative as you uncover the story of an astronaut named Selene. Selene has crash landed on an alien planet which offers some seemingly faced past and challenging combat (the combat was giving me some flashbacks to playing Vanquish on PS3). We heard the tag line “death is only the beginning” which seems to be more than just a cool sounding line. It looks like when you die, you are thrown back into the game but everything changes, so you always have to think on your feet. Cool! Returnal releases on April 30th.

Knockout City (PS4)

Knockout City has been in development for 4 years, by an indecent studio. That’s what they said, but I noticed at the end there was also an EA logo attached. Take that as you will, but it makes me nervous. Knockout City is an online, team based dodgeball game. That sounds pretty fun. It offers a 1v1 mode, a 3v3 mode and something called a ‘Back Alley Brawl’. It looks like it features trick shots, pump fakes, dodging, catching and in some game modes ‘special balls’. Apparently, you can also become the ball. Just remember the 5 D’s of dodgeball – dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge. It looks to be a fun game, but a tad too gimmicky for my liking. That’s just me though! If you are interested in the game, head over to to join the beta. Knockout City drops on May 21st.

Sifu (PS4/5)

Coming sometime in 2021 is this action game from Sloclap. It was just a short teaser but it did look fun. Imagine if the hallway scene from Oldboy was a video game and you get Sifu.

Solar Ash (PS4/5)

Solar Ash is due to be released later this year. Visually it kind of reminded me of No Man’s Sky meets Dreams. It was described as a 3D platform that is all about speed. You play as a voidrunner and need to quickly traverse the varying landscapes as you make your way through a black hole. It looks to be like an inline skating kind of thing and it is just all about speed. Traversing is fast, combat is fast, everything is fast. It’s not really my cup of tea, so I’ll probably give this one a miss.

5 Nights at Freddy’s : Security Breach (PS4/5)

As soon as I saw this, I rolled my eyes. I never really got into the whole 5 Nights at Freddy’s scene. I love horror games, but this franchise didn’t do it for me. Maybe it was overhyped for me. With that being said, this trailer did actually look really good and it piqued my interest. It’s coming out sometime this year and if the price is right, I’ll give it a go.

Oddworld : Soulstorm (PS4/5)

From a franchise I disliked, right into one I adored. Abe’s Oddysee was one of my early games as a child and I was a huge fan. I think this game looks fantastic and I am very eager to play it. It has been described as a 2.9D platformer. It is still an Oddworld game as you know them, but has made a few updates. The haptic feedback on PS5 will be used to show you Abe’s heartbeat. They have added a looting and crafting system to the game. You can choose to play as a pacifist or an agent of chaos, or anywhere in between. It looks to have a really good narrative and once again your mission is to save the Mudokons. Mark your calendars for April 6th! Here is a nice added bonus : active PS Plus subscribers get the PS5 version for no additional cost. Awesome!

Kena : Bridge of Spirits (PS4/5)

Wowee. The environment in this game was stunning. The gameplay looked pretty fun as well. It looks to be an action/adventure game and it definitely has me intrigued. Unfortunately, I really struggled to understand the voice acting in the trailer, so I couldn’t pick up on the storyline. I don’t know if it was just me, but I felt that the music was too loud and it was drowning out the rest. Gosh, when did I become so old? Still, I’m very interested in this and it releases on August 24th. My birthday (hint, hint, dear readers)!

Deathloop (PS5)

I loved the artwork for the cinematics in this trailer. I love that comic book style. Probably because I love comic books. Deathloop is a first person shooter and the combat looks really fun. It looks to have a nice combination of shooting, melee and abilities. I don’t know what the story line is but I was picking up strong hints of deja-vu, death and some kind of loop. Deathloop is releasing on May 21st 2021 and will be exclusive to PS5 for exactly 1 year.

FF7 Remake Intergrade (PS5)

A PS5 remake of the PS4 remake of the Ps1 game. Cool bananas! It features a tonne of improvements including : graphics/performance optimisation, a new difficulty level (normal classic), faster load times, a photo mode and some graphic improvements. I don’t care much for photo modes, I never really have, but I can see the appeal. I wonder how much the graphics can actually improve. Side by side, I definitely noticed a difference in some parts, but not all. If it wasn’t a side by side comparison, I doubt that I or anyone else would notice.

The surprise addition here is the additional story content featuring Yuffie. That should be a lot of fun. From what I’m gathering, the Yuffie content is only on PS5 and not available at all on PS4. The good news is, if you own the PS4 version, you can upgrade to the PS5 version for free and you can transfer your save file across. Now it’s just a matter of getting a console! The FF7 remake remake will release on June 10th of this year.

And that’s the end of State of Play! Some pretty cool announcements were mad. I’m looking forward to Deathloop and Oddworld most of all, but I will likely check out everything except for Solar Ash. What games are you most excited for? Let me know in the comments!
