NBA All-Star 2021

For better or worse, we are having an All-Star weekend in 2021. I’m not here to debate whether or not it’s a good idea in the current climate. I’m not even going to debate who should have been in because I hate doing that (although I do really disagree with some sections this year). I’m just going to give the lists and then talk about some ideas that I have for future All-Star weekends.

The participants for the skills contest, 3 point shootout and the dunk contest are yet to be announced. We know that the skills contest and the 3 point shootout will take place prior to the jump of the All-Star game. The dunk contest will take place at half-time.

Once again, it won’t be East vs West. The Captains will each take turns picking players and the teams will be built that way. It’s going to be a pretty big night, I suspect it will take 4-5 hours to do it all in one night. Unfortunately for me, it’s the same night as AEW’s Revolution PPV, so I’m going to have about 10 hours worth of content to report on in one day! Yikes.

Like I said, I don’t want to argue snubs or undeserving selections (like James Harden). You could literally do it for days. Instead, I want to talk about some potential changes moving forward. Commissioner Silver, if you are reading, you can have your people call my people and we can work something out.

The Skills Contest

I don’t actually hate the skills contest, but I can understand why some people do. There is only one thing that I would change. I don’t like how if a player misses the pass 2 or 3 times, they can just move on. I don’t think it’s fair at all. You could just quickly chuck all your balls and move on. They should have to stay there until they can pass the ball through the hoop or time runs out.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea to alternate the skills contest though. Get a rotating roster of opening acts happening. Skills contest one year, HORSE the next, Shooting Stars competition. Keep the opening act fresh!

The Celebrity Game

It needs to be a bigger deal and it needs some real celebrities. And get the No Dunks crew in the game before they get too old!

The 3 Point Contest

The 3 Point Contest is basically perfect. I wouldn’t complain with a few more competitors and maybe an extra round. It always feels like it’s over too quickly. Get the players some extra rest so they can perform better in the later rounds. Heck, even do the preliminary rounds first, then do the first round of the dunk contest, then back to the shooters. Shake it up a bit. It’s not like either contest use the whole court.

The Dunk Contest

I still like the Dunk Contest, but it is a shell of what it used to be. I don’t mind seeing some younger players in it, but I wish some of the superstars would have a go.

The main issue with the contest is how it’s scored. It’s an absolute joke. Not every dunk is a 50! They are so inconsistent. They need to get rid of numerical scoring. You just watch everyone dunk and then pick the two best to advance. Do that every round. No numerical scores.

I think it would be even better to do fan voting, live on the NBA app. Get rid of the panel.

The All-Star Game

It needs a lot of work. Here are my ideas. As long as we use the East and West conferences to divide the playoffs, we should use it to divide the All-Star game. East vs West. It’s a tried and tested formula. I’d like to see the winning team get home advantage for the NBA Finals. So if the Eastern Conference win the game, whoever makes it the NBA Finals from the Eastern Conference gets home advantage. I’m pretty sure they do that in baseball.

To incentivise the teams who aren’t going to make the playoffs, maybe they can have an increased % chance of a higher draft pick or something?

I’d also like to ditch fan voting for the All-Star game. It’s so dumb sometimes. Did you know that at one point Klay Thompson was in the top 10 for votes this year? I love Klay. We all love Klay. But he hasn’t played a single second of basketball this season! How can he be an All-Star?

I also don’t like how one team can have 3 or 4 All-Stars. Does Brooklyn really deserve 3 All-Stars this year? Does Boston deserve 2? They aren’t even at .500!

Here’s my idea to solve both problems. We extended the rosters from 12 to 15. Every team gets one All-Star, no more, no less. The All-Star will be chosen by his team, both the players and the coaches can vote. They can put a fan vote up for fans of that team if they want to, but ultimately the decision comes down to the team.

I still like the idea of the Coach with the best record getting invited to coach the game.

You could toy around with the format a little bit, but I like the idea of the classic game. 4 12 minute quarters, most points win. It just makes sense.

I didn’t like the quarter by quarter format that they used last year. It would be kind of cool to see a few smaller games. For example, if the roster was 15, you could make 3 teams of 5 and each team could play one quarter. The final quarter would be played by the best of the 3 teams or a combination of players, as voted on by either fans or decided by the coaches.

Well, those are my ideas anyway. I really like the idea of having one All-Star per team. What do you guys think?
