The Problem(s) with Dark

As I’ve mentioned before, I was about 6 months late to Dynamite and Dark. I watched the debut episode of Dynamite and decided to binge watch everything to catch up. To make my life easier, I thought I’d skip Dark. After about 4 or 5 episodes of Dynamite, I realised that I had made an error. So, I quickly watched the first few episodes and then continued to binge both shows until I was up to date. I’ve not missed an episode of either since.

Dark used to be so exciting. It was a good way to rotate TV time between the talent and it was a good opportunity for some of the lesser known talent to show what they had. Dark was about an hour long and was usually action packed from start to finish. I understand COVID and the lack of a live audience has limited Dark, but I don’t think that’s an excuse for lazy programming. Especially not anymore that live fans are back at AEW.

When was the last time a Dark match had you hanging on the edge of your seat? Better yet, when was the last time you could watch a whole episode of Dark without getting bored? Or even a whole match? I’ve been thinking of writing this for ages and now that Dark is on in the background, I figure it’s a good a time as any. I’m not saying the quality of wrestling is bad, all the matches are good enough. But none of them mean anything anymore. It’s basically always a permanent jobber vs an established star. It’s 100% predictable and 100% boring.

Remember the AAA title match between Kenny Omega and Jack Evans? That was one of the best AEW matches I’ve seen. It really put Evans on the map for me. What about Omega and Janela in a No DQ match? Or anything with Omega really! The Falls Count Anywhere match between Darby Allin, Jimmy Havoc and Jack Evans? Cima vs Darby Allin? Best Friends (including Orange Cassidy) vs Pac and TH2? What about when Abadon made her first appearance in a match against Shida?

I miss that version of Dark! AEW has so much talent and they are not utilising Dark to showcase it at all. It’s like AEW has traded quality for quantity. Dark is always 90-120 minutes nowadays, about 10 matches long and it’s a snooze fest. I don’t mind if they want to make it a two hour show (in fact, I’m all for it) but they need to cut back on some of the jobbers. Or, at least make the jobbers not jobbers. Give them a few surprise wins here and there so it’s not so predictable. And use some of the talent! It’s not bad if Omega has the odd appearance on Dark. Or even a title defense from time to time. Give us some No DQ matches again. Just something besides an established star beating a jobber by pinfall.

You want to see tonight’s card? I won’t even list the results because I’m sure you can guess them all. I honestly cannot remember the last time I didn’t perfectly predict the results of an episode of Dark.

AEW Dark Card for September 22nd

We had some debut performances and some of the permanent jobbers. Most of the jobbers are pretty forgettable. Even now, looking back at the list, I’m having a hard time putting faces to the names. Most of the debuts are the same. Some of these guys, you see week after week, but I still can’t remember their names. I’m not saying we can’t have new people or even one off appearances. But they need to stand out! Remember Abadon’s first appearance? Nobody forgot that. We didn’t see her again for months after that, but nobody forgot. I don’t know if it’s AEW’s fault or the fault of the talent but it has to change.

Another thing that needs to change, is Dark’s commentary team. It is rubbish. Tazz, Veda and Excalibur just ramble and bicker like a bunch of clowns. It’s infuriating. It honestly makes me so mad. I can’t mute it because I don’t want the action in the ring to be silent. I like to hear the hits and manoeuvres. I cannot stand the sound of their rambling though. Especially Tazz. I have Dark on in the background whilst I work on this and it’s driving me crazy. Shut up! They hardly ever call the action. They just talk about garbage non stop and occasionally talk about what is happening in the ring. Half the time, they can’t even get the names of the performers right. It needs to change! One of them can stay and the other seat can be filled by a wrestler each week. The 3 of them as a team does not work though.

This has been on my chest for a while and I hope an AEW executive has a read. I don’t mean any disrespect. I love this company. I love the wrestlers. I love it! I want to see it succeed. It would be foolish to ignore how much better it can be though. There is so much room for improvement. I can help, Mr. Khan. I know what the people want. Get in touch with me and we can make this work!

EDIT : I have to say, Lee Johnson vs Ben Carter was a very good match and I honestly thought Lee Johnson was going to win. I guess I don’t know everything after all! Also, Eddie Kingston did not pick up the 3 count tonight, He broke it at the 2, but they still counted 3. See you all in a few hours after the Dynamite special.
